GAHDA Community Support in Grand'Anse, Haiti
GAHDA team serving the Grand'Anse community

History of the Grand'Anse Health & Development Association

Prior to our recent focus solely on breast cancer initiatives, GAHDA for many years operated as a vital first responder to the frequent natural disasters and political instabilities that affected the Grand'Anse region. Following catastrophic events such as Hurricane Matthew in 2016 and the 2021 earthquake, the organization coordinated extensive relief efforts that included the dispersal of food, medicines, and essential supplies.

These programs prioritized the most vulnerable families, delivering food packages and medical support to those in isolated areas. Beyond immediate survival, the organization provided building materials for home repairs to over 3,000 individuals who had lost their housing, ensuring that families could begin the long process of recovery.

Providing immediate, compassionate support to marginalized groups and those living in extreme need — a reliable, non-judgmental safety net for the community.

Parallel to its emergency work, GAHDA managed a "Helping Hand" program designed to provide immediate support to marginalized groups and those living in extreme need. This initiative acted as a reliable, non-judgmental safety net, covering critical expenses such as funeral costs, emergency transportation to medical care in other parts of Haiti, and medications for chronic conditions. The team also provided daily meals for elderly widows and essential support for new mothers. Because the staff were deeply integrated members of the community, they were trusted to intervene humanely in times of personal crisis where existing services were unavailable.

The organization's long-term development projects focused on fostering economic and educational resilience across the Grand'Anse. GAHDA empowered local women through goat distribution programs and supported the growth of micro-enterprises to build household assets. Education was a cornerstone of this work; the organization consistently funded school tuition, administrative fees, uniforms, and books for primary school children to ensure their schooling remained uninterrupted during regional hardships. Additionally, the team collaborated with religious leaders and new organizations to build local capacity and provide cultural orientation for those entering the Grand'Anse.
